Thrall”s Opera House and Community House No. 2 (just north of the four-way stop in downtown New Harmony) were saved, a replica of the Harmonist labyrinth was built on the town”s south side and other houses were saved and restored. The 1941 wedding of Owen descendant Kenneth Dale Owen and Jane Blaffer proved to be a significant event in the town”s restoration. Owen, a geologist, worked for Blaffer”s father (a Humble Oil Co. founder) in Texas, and while he had little appreciation for his hometown”s heritage, the new Mrs. Owen quickly realized the significance of its past and its potential, Kahle said. She became ‘a really good friend’ of the town, and largely through her efforts the Roofless Church was built, along with the New Harmony Inn, Red Geranium and other properties. She remains deeply committed to the town, at the age of 93.Historic New Harmony, Inc.
